Book Review – 10 Best College Majors for Your Personality

0313_bookreviewFiguring out what you want to declare for your college major can be a difficult process, especially if you’re unsure about what you want to do for the rest of your life. Dr. Laurence Shatkin, author of “10 Best College Majors for Your Personality,” realizes the importance of choosing a college major and wrote this book in order to give students a starting point to help them decide what major they should declare. The purpose of the book is to help students select a major based on an assessment of their personality.

The book is broken up into different parts.

 Part I outlines six different personality types that will be assessed throughout the book. These different personalities include Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional.

 Part II then provides a “personality assessment,” which intends to help the reader determine what his or her dominant personality is through a series of questions.

 Part III allows readers to explore different major options based on their personality assessment and factors such as projected earnings, job growth in the field, demographic, self-employment, skills and more.

 Part IV offers an in-depth explanation of different college majors, including a career snapshot, facts about the major and details about related jobs.

For the most part, this book is a good resource for students who are trying to figure out what major they might want to declare in college. It’s a fairly unique approach and is something that can appeal to many students who are looking to narrow down the many options that are available to them. While it doesn’t offer information on every major and career option — which is likely impossible to do — it does provide solid information about some of today’s most popular and useful college majors.
