Super Teens-California and a WINNER!
Happy Wednesday! Here are a few more of the 2010 Super Teens for you to meet. Congrats to them for being Super! Below we have also announced the winner of the SAT flashcards… was it you?!
Kathryn Keeley of Woodlake Union High School has volunteered at the Assistance Service Dog Educational Center to train her dog to become a service dog for the mentally and physically handicapped. She is also editor of her school’s newspaper and was selected to participate in the State Science Fair for the past four years. She also maintains a 4.2 GPA and volunteers during the summer at the Sequoia National Park Visitor Center. She plans to major in biology in college and eventually get a Ph.D. She also hopes to continue to be involved with journalism, although she knows it won’t be her ultimate career path.
“I think my initiative in pursuing opportunities sets me apart from my peers,” says Roger Li of La Jolla High School. He has a passion for politics and has volunteered to help with a congressional campaign, the San Diego Democratic Party, and the La Jolla Democratic Club. He has also worked with several nonprofits in the San Diego area and volunteers with a local ESL program. After college, Roger hopes to work in either international relations or politics. He likes those fields because they combine altruism and public speaking. “I want to show other teens that it’s possible to find something that you’re passionate about and run with it,” he says. “The possibilities truly are endless.”
Malia Mailes of La Canada High School has been an active Girl Scout since kindergarten and received her Girl Scout Gold Award this year. For her Gold Award project, she led the crusade to make a key downhill highway in her area safer. Her efforts were chronicled in a Los Angeles Times article. She is also the founder of her school’s Italian Cultural Club, is on the yearbook staff, and is leader of a youth group at her church. She plans to go to college, live a happy life, and have a career where she can make a difference in the lives of other people.
